OK: Coburn "I sterilized lots of underage girls"

Let's watch our "liberal" media ignore this.
Today, when Tom Coburn continued to be pressed on whether or not he sterilized Amanda Plummer without her consent, he revealed that he had sterilized women who had 3 babies and didn't want anymore. Or, in his own words:

---
In an interview this week on the Tulsa radio station KRMG, Coburn was asked: "To your knowledge, could this situation have happened, or has happened with any other women?"

Coburn, a physician, replied: "I've done this lots to women who have come in with emergency things who have asked me to sterilize them, underage. When they've already had three babies."
---

Parental consent is the holy grail for anti-abortion activists. The idea of young women terminating their pregnancies without even needing to speak to their parents is anathema to them.

They will likely continue to support Coburn, but these words are out of his own mouth. He is saying out of his own mouth: "I STERILIZED LOTS OF UNDERAGE GIRLS."

This is getting into a whole other realm. This man advocated the death penalty for abortion doctors, and yet he himself has not only committed abortions, he has sterilized women. And not because their lives were in danger. It was simply because they didn't want anymore babies. These were underage girls who were making decisions they may regret for the rest of their lives. He violated all the principles of his party. He took away their ability to have children. Not only that, he then campaigned to kill doctors who perform abortions on adult women who can make their own choices. All while he has taken away the future children of women who are not even out of high school, who have not even gone to their senior prom.

This is not simply hypocritical. It's diabological. It's wrong. It's, as he would say, EVIL.

Please, donate to Brad Carson today. It is absurd that he has to answer attacks that he's "too liberal" or that he missed a few votes or that he is an abortionist, all while Tom Coburn brags about sterilizing underage women. Even in Oklahoma, this is obscene, and should be rectified.

Actually, the holy grail for anti-abortionists... (none / 0)

Is banning abortion.  Parental consent and late-term abortion are their wedges -- issues where they believe they can assemble a solid majority behind their position and get laws restricting abortion passed.  If those laws are upheld, it would establish a countervailing precedent they can use in subsequent legal arguments towards reversing Roe vs. Wade.

The problem with parental consent, of course, is that it ignores certain situations which, while extreme, might not be such a small subset of underage girls seeking abortions: the girl who's been raped and impregnated by her own father (or brother, uncle, grandfather, stepbrother, etc.), and the girl whose strict, conservative father would beat and possibly kill her if he found out she was pregnant.

Anyway, to put this a little bit back on topic -- what a scumbag that Coburn is!  If they do elect the creep, he may take over Jesse Helms's role as the most embarrassing wing-nut on the Republican side of the Senate.

My point was that this goes against everything (none / 0)

anti-abortion activists claim is important to them.

I guess most of them will still vote for him, but hopefully this will cause at least a handful to reconsider. Do you think it will?

Oh, and the 9/23 SUSA poll has (none / 0)

this race tied, with 6% for the independent. So Carson definitely needs all of your help, if any of you can help.

Re: Oh, and the 9/23 SUSA poll has (none / 0)

Good news for us; SUSA's state level polls seem to have a Republican bias.  Weren't they the outfit that produced those turkeys that showed Bush leading in New Jersey and the race tied in Maryland?  I suspect a tie in a SUSA poll means a five-point lead for the Democrat in real life.
